Dr. Alex Macisz’s love for animals has been a lifelong passion, but his decision to pursue veterinary medicine became clear during his first semester of college when his own dog was bitten by a snake. Experiencing firsthand the care provided at LSU’s veterinary school opened his eyes not only to the importance of veterinary medicine, but also to the impact veterinarians can have on both pets and their families. “That experience made me realize how as a vet, you can help the client as much as the patient,” he recalls.
He went on to earn his DVM from Louisiana State University in 2025 and now brings his dedication and compassion to the General Practice team at Veterinary Healthcare Associates. During his first visit to VHA, Alex worked with several different departments and was struck by the mentorship and teamwork across the hospital. “All the doctors I interacted with and shadowed were so helpful and supportive. I knew if I came to VHA, I’d be surrounded by people who would push me to grow and learn from every department,” he says.
The most rewarding part of his career so far has been the ability to provide help as a general practitioner while being part of a team dedicated to serving the community. He carries with him the memory of an oncology patient he met during vet school, one who defied all odds and lived nearly a decade beyond his prognosis. “That case was a realization of the significance of our field. We were able to give that dog a second chance at life and time to meet family members he otherwise wouldn’t have,” Alex shares.
At home, Alex’s two dogs keep him busy and bring joy to his days–Mahi, a German Shorthair Pointer, and Sadie, a Labrador Retriever. Outside of work, his creativity shines through cooking, another lifelong passion. He also finds peace in the outdoors, especially while fishing.
To balance the emotional demands of veterinary medicine, Alex strives to keep perspective, reminding himself that he is always doing his best for his patients. He values VHA’s supportive environment that makes this possible: “VHA has the right people around to help navigate the emotions that come with veterinary medicine,” he explains. What excites him most about his future here is the opportunity to keep learning, growing, and becoming a vital part of the VHA team.
