Stacy Nelson Emergency DVM, MBA

Dr. Stacy Nelson brings her decades of experience, a passion for emergency medicine, and a deep appreciation for the human-animal bond to VHA. Her journey into veterinary medicine began in childhood, inspired by her grandmother, a nurse whose farm became Dr. Nelson’s favorite place to spend time. Surrounded by animals and guided by a role model dedicated to caring for others, she discovered early on that helping both people and animals was her calling.

She earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Florida in 2000 and has spent her career caring for patients through both routine and critical moments. As an Emergency Doctor, Dr. Nelson thrives in the fast-paced environment of emergency medicine, where every day brings new challenges and opportunities to make a difference. The most rewarding part of her career continues to be helping patients and supporting the families who love them.

Dr. Nelson was drawn back to VHA because of the complex cases, busy caseload, and collaborative environment that allow her to practice at a high level while continuing to grow professionally. What she values most, however, is the team. “I love the team. These are amazing people,” she shares. She also appreciates being part of a hospital where talented doctors work together to provide exceptional care and support one another.

Throughout her career, Dr. Nelson has been continually inspired by the relationships between pets and their people. Being entrusted with the care of a beloved family member and witnessing the strength of that bond has shaped her approach to veterinary medicine and reinforced the importance of compassionate, client-centered care.

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Nelson enjoys spending time with her husband, Doug, and their three children, Jocie, Bobby, and Hallie. Their home is full of animals, including Chili, a Golden Retriever mix; Penny, a Bluetick Coonhound; Rusty, a lovable mixed breed; Beatrice, a Bloodhound; Leo, a Yellow Labrador Retriever; and several horses.

To balance the emotional demands of emergency medicine, Dr. Nelson practices yoga faithfully and credits it with helping her stay grounded during stressful situations. She also values the ability to fully dedicate herself to her patients while at work, knowing they are supported by an exceptional team when it is time to step away and recharge.
